St. Jude Medical Center is one of Southern California’s most respected and technologically advanced hospitals, with core values in dignity, excellence, service, and justice. With over 350 beds, nearly 700 physicians on staff, and offerings in nearly every medical specialty, St. Jude Medical Center is a faith-based non-profit organization setting the standard for medical care. The facility was originally constructed in 1957, and a four-phase redevelopment of the complex began in 2003. Pierre Landscape’s contribution to the project focused on the Northwest Tower Addition, which included installing a 4th floor rooftop courtyard as well as street side landscaping. After demolishing the existing landscape, Pierre crews installed 18 automatic irrigation zones; brought in 76 cubic yards of soil amendment, 5 tons of cobble, 1 ton of decorative pebbles, 142 cubic yards of mulch, 57 faux boulders, 2 trex decks, 110 precast pots, and 42 cubic yards of bioswale media; and planted over 3,500 shrubs, 60 trees from 24” and 36” boxes, and a dozen palms ranging from 15’ tall to 25’ tall. Surrounded by hospital room windows, the rooftop garden provides peaceful and colorful views, as well as an outdoor space to enjoy, for patients throughout their hospital stay.
