The 27-acre park had more than 80 percent of its grounds renovated. Partnering with MTM Construction, Pierre completed the landscape and irrigation portion of the project. The project began with the demolition of the field on site. After the demo was complete, 478,600 square feet of soil preparation and hydroseeded turf were installed. Box trees ranging in size were strategically placed and installed around the premises, including a 36” Magnolia Grandiflora box tree and several 24” Robinia A. Purple Robe box trees. Various sizes of shrubs were also installed around and near the park's new pathway, which circles around the premises. The Pierre team installed a total of 2,354 shrubs that vary in vibrant colors. The park now includes over 220 Aptenia Cordifolia dirt flats, 140 Carissa Glandiflora, and 1,436 Actostaphylos U. Point Reyes.
The Ted Watkins Park’s renovations were paid for by a $6.8 million investment from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. With the renovations complete, the park now includes walking paths, a skate park, fitness stations, and a picnic area. A new program called the “Park After Dark Program” has been implemented, which allows visitors to stay at the park into the evening. Alternative indoor programs are also now offered at the park, including computer classes and a teen club.
